Released earlier this year, Alien: Romulus was a critical and commercial hit, breathing some much-needed life into a struggling franchise. Set between the events of Ridley Scott's Alien (1979) and James Cameron's Aliens (1986), the film introduced fans to a new crew of young space colonists who encounter the hotstile creatures while aboard a derelict space station.

Written and directed by Fede Alvarez, Alien: Romulus embraced the horror roots of the franchise. The story did a remarkable job connecting the six prior films while also doing some new and fresh. Not all of Alvarez's choices worked in my opinion, but I commend him for taking the series in a bold direction.

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Alien: Romulus scored an impressive 80% with critics and an 85% among general audiences. In addition to its positive response, Alien: Romulus was a commercial hit, grossing $350.8 million worldwide.

With new energy now instllied in the Alien franchise, you may be wondering what's next. We know there's an Alien FX series on the way. Titled Alien: Earth, it's set three decades prior to the events of 1979's Alien.

But now we have confirmation that there are plans for an Alien: Romulus sequel! 20th Century Fox Studios president Steve Asbell revealed to The Hollywood Reporter, "We're currently working on a sequel idea now."

"We haven’t quite closed our deal with Fede [Alvarez], but we are going to, and he has an idea that we’re working on. "

While the idea is still being worked on, it sounds like the plan is to continue the story of Rain and Andy. David Jonsson's portrayal of Andy, an android reprogrammed by Rain's late father as her surrogate brother, was one of the film's stand-out performances.

Although the particular Alien: Romulus story did come to a conclusion, what's next for Rain and Andy remains to be seen -- espcially as it pertains to Weyland-Yutani. The film left off with the two of them entering cryostasis on the way to Yvaga.
