At some point the lineage will end

Daisy Ridley walked onto the Star Wars set for her first appearance as the next generation of a Skywalker. Some loved her as the mysteriously shrouded Rey while others just griped over the written dialogue. Now, there could be a non-Skywalker future ahead for the property.

It was announced earlier in the week that a new trilogy series will be brought to the big screen. Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, the new trilogy may or may not involve a Skywalker.

There was speculation, maybe even a little rumor that the next trilogy could wrap the Skywalker saga once and for all. We do know that the final film in the third series ended with a cryptic twist about children surviving with possible Jedi powers. That has yet to be addressed because there hasn't been a Star Wars film since Episode 9.

There has been a lot of discussion about future Star Wars properties. Another Donald Glover appearance as Lando Calrission is on the table as are three other potential stand alone films from various writers. There is also a potential trilogy that may or may not come to life. We also know that a potential stand alone film featuring Rey may be in the works as well.

Some of that speculation has been debunked, and this new series may go in a different direction entirely.

What Star Wars and Disney are going to find out is if an expansive universe without a Skywalker is possible, especially a trilogy. There is a lot of written canon to lean on but in nearly every written text or film there is the threat of Darth Vader or a Sith lord. There is a Skywalker timeline that fall in line with the story. In Rogue One, we knew Princess Lea was part of the off-screen script and then part of it in the ending. We know that during Solo, that timeline was the backstory to Han Solo. In the final trilogy we ended the Lea arc, closed the door a bit more on Luke's arc, but widened the arc of Rey.

If Star Wars is to exist on a plane without a Skywalker in the galaxy that might be hard to pull off because up until now, again, the timelines have all synced together. Fans easily embraced the final trilogy given the closures of Han, Lea, and Luke but while they fell short on captivating the audience, we blame Rian Johnsons' episode 8, the fact remained, it was a Star Wars/Skywalker series.

Who will lead the Jedi? Can a Star Wars film exist without Jedi? How far into the Star Wars future would someone need to go to create an entirely new series without Skywalker influence without it being a similar story arc to the originals?

Naturally, no one is talking about what this series might be about but I'm not sure it will have the same interest without a Skywalker in the galaxy, but then again, some fans are quite over it.
