After an incredibly successful run at the box office, Deadpool & Wolverine is finally heading to streaming. For those who have yet to see the film or are ready for a second go at it, the hilarious threequel will come to Disney+ on November 12th.
The announcement was made by Marvel Studios with the social media sharing a juvenile pun that couldn't be any more perfect for the tone of Deadpool & Wolverine.
Deadpool & Wolverine is the third film in the Merc with a Mouth's movie franchise, but it's the first to be made under the Marvel Studios banner. Prior to Marvel acquiring the movie rights to Wade Wilson, it was 20th Century Fox who brought the wise-cracking character to the big screen.
The first live-action appearance of Wade Wilson was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the spin-off Wolverine movie starring Hugh Jackman as Logan. Despite featuring casting Ryan Reynolds as Wade, many consider this to be the worst appearance of Deadpool on the big screen. Fox absolutely butchered the character giving the merc with a mouth... no mouth.
Thankfully, Reynolds got another shot at it, this time in his own solo movie. Deadpool released in 2016 and was a smash hit. Rated-R with tons of blood, action, and juvenile humor, it became the highest-grossing R-rated film ever and brought the character into mainstream Hollywood.
A sequel was released in 2018 and once again saw Reynolds reprise his role as Wade Wilson. He was joined by Josh Brolin as Cable and Zazie Beetz as Domino. Although many agree it wasn't as good as the original, it still earned nearly $800 million at the global box office, surpassing the first film.
This would be the final Deadpool movie released by Fox as Disney acquired the right to the character when it purchased 21st Century Fox. Many were concerned about the character's future under the normally family-friendly brand, fearing Disney would reign in the inappropriate nature of the character.
Thankfully that didn't happen. Deadpool & Wolverine had all the same cursing, brutal action, and crude humor that made the first two movies so great. But I would say it topped them for the simple fact that it finally gave us Wade Wilson's Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine together on screen at once. Not to mention all the other fun cameos we got to experience one last time — and one that might even spark an entirely new franchise.
Deadpool & Wolverine grossed over $1.3 billion globally when it was all said and done. And now it will hopefully boost the subscriber numbers for Disney+ when it arrives on November 12th.
