Listen to Moana 2's lead single "Beyond," the next song your kid will be obsessed with
With just weeks until Moana 2 hits theaters, Disney has shared the highly anticipated sequel's lead single, titled "Beyond."
The powerful new track emphasizes Moana's desire, and trepidation, to answer the call of the ocean. "What lies beyond?" Moana voice actor Auli’i Cravalho belts. "Under skies I've never seen / Will I lose myself between my home and what's unknown?"
"If I go beyond leaving all I love behind / With the future of our people still to find / Can I go beyond?" the ballad continues.
"Beyond," performed by Auli'i Cravalho and written by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, is the first featured track from Moana 2. And it marks the first song that audiences can hear from the movie's new composers Barlow and Emily Bear. The duo took over for Lin-Manuel Miranda after he composed the soundtrack for the first film.
The song released online is the End Credit Version, so there's a chance that the song could sound a bit different during the actual movie.
A sequel set three years after the events of the first film, Moana 2 follows the titular heroine, now a more established wayfinder, on an expansive new voyage after receiving an unexpected call from her ancestors. Moana embarks on a new journey to the far seas of Oceania with Maui and a crew of unlikely seafarers where they will encounter dangers unlike anything they've ever faced.
Moana 2 actually originated as a long-form limited series for Disney+ but was reworked into a theatrical sequel. David Derrick Jr. is making his feature directorial debut with the film. He previously served as a story artist for 2016's Moana, 2019's The Lion King, 2021's Raya and the Last Dragon and Encanto, and 2022's Strange World.
Moana 2 is slated to open in theaters across the United States on November 27, 2024. The Thanksgiving weekend used to be a golden ticket for Disney, so we'll see if Moana 2 can recapture that box office magic.
