Tickets for Moana 2 went on sale this week. The highly anticipated sequel Disney's animated musical adventure is scheduled to hit theaters Thanksgiving weekend on November 27, 2024.
With a month to go, Regal Cinemas has revealed its lineup of collectibles for the upcoming movie. Popcorn buckets based on movies are are the rage right now, and it's no different with Moana 2.
The "Wave Popcorn Container" features Moana communicating with a giant blue wave. She's donning a new outfit for the movie and the blue wave is translucent, so you can see the popcorn inside.
For the more traditional popcorn enthusiast, there's a Moana 2 popcorn bucket tin that simply features the painting of the island and the film's logo. It does come with a collector's domed cup though featuring a top that has Moana's boat sailing the sea away from the island. On the cup itself is an image of Moana and Maui.
The "Collector's Boat with Nachos" is probably the coolest-looking collectible of the bunch. It's Moana's outrigger boat complete with a sliding top and container that holds nachos and cheese. We're used to impressive collectible popcorn buckets released for films, but rarely do we see these types of things released for nachos. Truly, a new era.
Beyond these collectibles, the image also seems to confirm a lineup of Funko Pop figurines for Moana 2. Among the lineup are figurines of Moana, Maui, Moana's younger sister Simea, and the film's villain Matangi.
Written by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, and directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Miller, Moana 2 originated as a long-form limited streaming series for Disney+. However, it was reworked into a feature-length theatrical film.
Set three years after the events of the first film, Moana and Maui reunited for a new voyage. When Moana receives an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, she must "journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced."
2016's Moana received glowing reviews from critics and moviegoers, grossing over $687 million worldwide. The film was praised for its animation, music — it featured original songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda — and vocal performances. Sequels rarely live up to the hype of the original and given how big the first film has become, it's got some mighty big shoes to fill.
