The Nightmare Before Christmas

JACK SKELLINGTON (CHRIS SARANDON)
TIM BURTONÕS THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS - Why celebrate the spookiest time of the year for only 13 nights when you can celebrate for 31!? Freeform has expanded their annual Halloween programming event to "31 Nights of Halloween" bringing more thrills and chills to the entire month. From Oct. 1, the network will be invaded by everyoneÕs favorite witches, a murderous barber, out of control dinosaurs and everything else that goes bump in the night. Here’s another film one is amazed hasn’t been adapted to the stage yet. Tim Burton’s 1993 stop-motion classic has inspired a Haunted Mansion makeover and some of the most offbeat Disney songs ever. The stage production can truly cut loose with massive puppets for the otherworldly creatures and special designs for Jack and the others to be unique.

Burton himself could be talked into taking part and Danny Elfman could craft a few new tunes in his sleep. It will still keep to the sardonic edge of the original film with Jack’s misunderstandings of Christmas while retaining its unique heart. With the film still possessing a huge following, moving it to Broadway seems inevitable.

The Princess Diaries

The 2001 movie that made Anne Hathaway a star offers some surprising potential for a stage show. The story itself is wonderful, showcasing Mia’s transformation from high school geek to princess, and there can be several songs (a big “makeover” number is only natural). There can also be more development on how Mia feels about this and her relationship with her grandmother.

Obviously, Hathaway and Julie Andrews would be unlikely to take part, yet with so many 2000s movies being adapted into movies, this one should be considered. With a built-in fan base from the movies and books, the Diaries can be a royal story for the Broadway stage.
