In celebration of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace celebrating its 25th anniversary this year — I refuse to believe that I'm this old — Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is hosting a special Star Wars movie marathon.
On Friday, May 3rd, the Alamo Drafthouse New Mission in San Francisco will kick off its Star Wars May the 4th Marathon. All nine movies in the Skywalker Saga will be shown.
For those not good with math, this is a 21-hour movie marathon, ending on Saturday, May 4th.
There will be short breaks in between the films and unlimited coffee and water will be available to all. There will also be a custom menu full of Star-Wars themed specials.
Oh, and if you are attending, you better plan on staying. The theater reserves the right to offer your spot to someone else if you are late to the beginning or if you leave the theater.
Listen, I'm a pretty big Star Wars fan. My dad was one of the first in line for the first showing of Episode IV: A New Hope in 1977. He passed that fandom onto me. I wasn't born when the original trilogy was released, but I did catch the "Special Edition" re-releases in theaters in 1997 when I was 9 years old. I still remember dressing in line as Yoda in a cheap Halloween costume for it and how much fun I had with all my fellow Star Wars fans. Keep in mind, this is before Star Wars fandom was such a toxic culture.
This sounds like an amazing experience. And
I probably would've in my younger days. But I just don't think my aging body can deal with movie theater chairs for 21 hours anymore.
For those of you brave enough to endure 21 hours of straight Star Wars movies, tickets are available now . For those who don't live in the Bay Area, you can enter the Alamo Drafthouse Marathon Sweepstakes in which one lucky winner will win a free trip for two to San Francisco (including airfare and lodging) with two tickets to the marathon. The sweepstakes run through April 5th.
