From Scooby Doo to Walt Disney, Simple Plan released a new pop-punk cover of The Lion King's "Can You Feel the Love Tonight."
The new take on the beloved classic not only celebrates the 30th anniversary of Walt Disney Animation Studios' The Lion King, but also serves as the first single from Disney's upcoming album "A Whole New Sound."
Announced this week, "A Whole New Sound" will feature popular Disney songs reimagined by some of the world's most popular alternative, rock, and pop-punk bands.
This release of Simple Plan's "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" takes me right back to high school in the early 2000s.
"A Whole New Sound" is scheduled to release later this year. It will be available as a full album and on vinyl. Alongside the debut track, Disney also revealed artwork for the album, featuring Mickey & Friends sporting some punk-ish attire.
For anyone who grew up in the pop-punk era's heyday, you'll notice how on point the art is. Mickey, Donald and Goofy — looking cool as ever — are all perfectly posted on a staircase to a building. The trio are in black and white up against a purple brick backdrop. It's the perfect example of a pop-punk album cover.
The announcement of "A Whole New Sound" and release of Simple Plan's cover of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" comes after the band performed at EPCOT's Garden Rocks Series during the Flower & Garden Festival this year.
I, unfortunately, couldn't attend the concert when they performed, but footage from the show shared on social media by my fellow elder emo millennials made it look like an incredible time. It seems the Garden Rocks Series was just the beginning of Simple Plan's Disney tour. The band will take the stage at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event this year to perform their cover of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight."
We don't know what other bands will be featured on Disney's new album, but EPCOT's Eat to the Beat Concert Series lineup could give us a hint. Some alternative, rock, and pop-punk bands set to perform include Yellowcard — which I would absolutely love to see a cover from —Hoobastank, The Fray, We the Kings, Switchfoot, and Hanson (yes, please!).
What bands would you like to see covers from on "A Whole New Sound"?
