Could another Disney animated classic be hitting the Great White Way? Here’s what we know so far of the plans for a Tangled musical!

It’s been almost thirty years since Disney made Beauty and the Beast a Broadway musical. It was a genius move, producing a smash hit and showing how Disney movies, already brilliant musicals, could also work on stage.

This was followed by The Lion King, a Tony-award-winning success that’s still running 26 years later and the highest-grossing Broadway musical of all time. Disney has also tried productions based on The Little Mermaid, Tarzan, Mary Poppins, Aladdin, and Frozen to various degrees of success. Aladdin is still running on Broadway, while Frozen was closed during the COVID-19 pandemic but has a successful touring production.

Now, Disney appears to be trying for another tale as Broadway World reports plans are underway for a stage musical of Tangled. The 2010 animated hit brought the Rapunzel legend to life with Mandy Moore as the heroine, Zachary Levi as Flynn Rider, and Donna Murphy stealing the film as the sinister Gothel.

Like many Disney properties, a take on Rapunzel was shown in Once Upon a Time and there's buzz on a live-action movie adaptation as well.

With some wonderful songs to it, it’s a good basis for a Broadway show and could work out. Will it happen?

Is a Tangled musical really going to happen?

It should be noted just because Disney is working on this musical doesn’t mean it will actually open. It’s all too common for Broadway musicals to be announced and developed but never make it to the stage. Disney, for example, has in the past attempted musicals for Alice in Wonderland and Father of the Bride, but they never worked out.

There’s also how this may not even be for Broadway at all, as Disney does license stage productions for schools and professional groups. So, this could be just a “testing” of the property for the stage.

However, Tangled has already had a presence as the Disney Cruise Line has shown an abridged version of the film that boasted three new songs by Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken and Gleen Slater, the latter of whom made Disney’s Sister Act into a musical.

The story is perfect for the stage and, like other Disney musical adaptations, would likely add more songs and characters to the fun. Making Rapunzel’s long hair work in live-action can be tricky, but if the Disney cruise ships can pull it off, surely Broadway’s effects guys can.

So, at the moment, these are just initial plans, but there’s a chance that in a few years, Disney buffs can watch “I've Got a Dream” and “Mother Knows Best” on stage to make Tangled better than ever.
