Doctor Who sets a new Season 14 premiere date for Disney+

Fans finally know when the new season of Doctor Who will premiere on Disney+. The iconic sci-fi series is set to kick off a new year this May and find out what adventures the Doctor is getting into!

Since 1963, Doctor Who has been one of the mainstays of sci-fi television. It follows the Doctor, an alien who travels across time and space in the TARDIS, a craft that looks like a police call box on the outside but massive on the inside. 

The show has retained its longevity by the fact that every now and then the Doctor "regenerates" into a new body, allowing a new actor to take over. A 2023 special put in a twist as the Doctor experienced a rare "bi-generation" which allowed previous Doctor David Tennant to remain while Ncuti Gatwa became the 15th Doctor.

Gatwa made his full debut in the 2023 Christmas special "The Church of Ruby Road," which also introduced Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday, the Doctor's latest Companion. 

Now, at last, a premiere date has been set. Thanks to the show now being streamed internationally on Disney+, the premiere will start on May 10 at 7 p.m. ET in the U.S. and internationally (excluding the U.K.) with two brand-new episodes. In the U.K., the season will premiere at midnight GMT on May 11 on BBC iPlayer. 

That means the U.K. viewers will get the episodes a day later than those with Disney+, an interesting new direction. However, the show has been aided by the Disney budget, such as the lavish new TARDIS and special effects. 

The official description hints at the action to come. 

"This season of Doctor Who follows the Doctor and Ruby Sunday through infinite adventures across time and space in the TARDIS. From the Regency era in England to war-torn futures, the duo champion the forces of good while encountering incredible friends and dangerous foes."

Russell T Davies, who returns as showrunner, executive producer and writer shared his feelings in a statement. 

"At last, it's my great delight to unleash a whole new season of the Doctor and Ruby's adventures together. Monsters! Chases! Villains! Mysteries! And a terrifying secret that's been spanning time and space for decades. Don't miss a second!"

The show has already gained some press with the surprising news that Gibson will be leaving at the end of this season. Varada Sethu will join as a new companion, hinting that Ruby's storyline will be a focus for this year.

A new trailer is expected next week, but Disney+ fans are set to be the first to see the new Doctor on his new voyages while keeping to the magic of Doctor Who.
