Earlier this week video game publisher Electronic Arts announced the development of a new game based on Marvel's Black Panther. Naturally, there's lots of excitement surrounding the project as Black Panther is one of the most beloved superheroes from Marvel. Here's what we know about the game so far.

Everything we know about Marvel's Black Panther from EA

Unfortunately, we don't know much right now as it's still very early in development and still at least a few years away from release. In EA's announcement, it was revealed that the game is in development at Cliffhanger Games, a new triple-A development studio, in collaboration with Marvel Games.

Anyone familiar with the Marvel brand knows it's very protective of its characters. The goal of this partnership is "to ensure that we craft every aspect of Wakanda, its technology, its heroes, and our own original story with the attention to detail and authenticity that the world of Black Panther deserves."

With that being said, players will actually step into the suit of Black Panther and take on the mantle of Wakanda's protector. We don't know exactly what you'll be doing in the game, but it's an original, third-person action-adventure. Although it's being developed as a story-driven game, it sounds like players will have more control over the narrative itself, meaning player choice could come into play. It's possible this could simply be tied to gameplay mechanics, but perhaps these choices will impact how the story unfolds.

Marvel described Wakanda as a "rich Super Hero sandbox," which leads me to believe the action will primarily take place in the fictional country. It's possible that the action could take us on a globe-trotting adventure, though.

Although Marvel Games is collaborating on the project, it will primarily be Cliffhanger Games leading the development. The new studio is led by Kevin Stephens, formerly of Monolith Productions. The team is comprised of industry veterans who have worked on acclaimed action-adventure games like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and God of War, as well as blockbuster franchises such as Halo and Call of Duty.

There's no release date for Marvel's Black Panther game but EA said that it's early in development, which suggests it could be years from release. No platforms have been announced either but PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC seem most possible.

Although the character of Black Panther first debuted back in July 1996, the character most recently rose to cultural prominence in the mainstream media thanks, in large part, to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios released the Black Panther movie in 2018. It was both a critical and commercial success, receiving rave reviews while earning over $1.3 billion at the global box office.
