Get ready to see an Echo. Marvel has just released the first trailer for the new MCU Echo series, to hit Disney+ and Hulu this January. Here's what to know about this series!
Created by David Mack and Joe Quesada, Echo first appeared in the comics in 1999. Maya Lopez was the daughter of a mobster murdered by Wilson Kisk, aka the Kingpin. Taking pity on the girl, Fisk honored her father's dying wish to raise Maya, who at first appeared to have a mental deficiency. In reality, she was only deaf but gifted with photographic reflexes, meaning she could copy anything from fighting styles to a piano concerto just by seeing someone do it.
Raised to believe Fisk was a good man, Maya fought Daredevil, who proved how the Kingpin killed her father. Maya turned on Fisk, moving through identities such as Ronin (a masked warrior used by Hawkeye) and a member of the Avengers. More recently, Maya has become the host for the cosmic entity known as the Phoenix and a key Avenger.
The MCU Maya appeared in the Hawkeye series, which likewise had her raised by the Kingpin and fighting Hawkeye and Kate Bishop. This Maya is a skilled martial artist without the "copying" ability. She soon uncovered how corrupt Fisk was and turned on him which sets up this series.
What is Echo about?
The series has Maya returning to her home of Oklahoma, where she reconnects with her Native American roots and family. However, the Kingpin follows her, setting them on a collision course.
"The five-episode streaming event spotlights Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) as she is pursued by Wilson Fisk's (Vincent D'Onofrio) criminal empire. When the journey brings her home, she must confront her own family and legacy."
Who stars in Echo?
Alaqua Cox will reprise her role as Maya, notable as the actress is deaf in real life just as Maya is. Also, Vincent D'Onfrio will return as the Kingpin as this series will set up the planned Daredevil: Born Again series. The supporting cast includes veteran actor Graham Greene and Charlie Cox showing up as Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil.
- Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez / Echo
- Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk / Kingpin

When does Echo premiere?
Originally slated for mid-2023 and then November, the series was put off by the ongoing Hollywood strikes. It will now premiere January 10, 2024 and is notable as the first Disney+ MCU series to release all five episodes at once rather than weekly releases. It will also be available on Hulu until April 9, 2024.
With a fun lead heroine and some sharp action, Echo looks to be a good MCU show that sets up the planned Daredevil series so it's a must-watch for fans.
Echo premieres January 10, 2024 on Disney+ and Hulu.
