Elemental receives a worth and deserving Oscar nod for Disney
By Brian Miller
It is a bit of surprise that Pixar's Elemental received a nomination in the Best Animated Feature Film category but it shouldn't be.
Elemental takes you into an animated world where the four elements cohabitate in Elemental City. The Pixar film was not well-received by critics but it exceeded expectations despite its horrible opening numbers. Now, it's an Oscar-nominated film that should be considered a worthy film to win the category.
Elemental will be pitted against The Boy and the Heron, Nimona, Robot Dreams, and Spider-Man: Across the Spidey-Verse which should be its only competition.
At its core, Elemental is a story about finding common ground among different cultures while surrounding a love story and moral compass as well as finding your own path within the world. It's a great family watch and I thoroughly enjoyed the amazing vibrant illustrations in addition to the story itself.
Elemental started its box-office journey with a sluggish opening but it grew legs from word-of-mouth. The film ended its run at the box office with nearly $500 million worldwide coming it at $496.4 million. That's not a bad take for a film that initially looked like it was going to quietly disappear.
The film's opening weekend was projected to land close to $50 million but it came up short of making $30 million after being released at the same time as The Flash and The Blackening. After several weeks on the charts making modest gains, the film quietly maintained good weekly numbers and astonishingly stuck around through the summer months, it opened in May of 2023 in the United States.
Elemental can be streamed on Disney+ and is available to purchase on streaming services like Amazon Prime Movies, VUDU, and Apple TV.
