Now that Marvel Studios Hall H Presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 has come to a conclusion, we have a clearer direction for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The panel featured all sorts of exciting announcements, reveals and first-looks at upcoming Marvel movies, including Thunderbolts*, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and the newly retitled Avengers movie.

While Marvel's movie dates sometimes shift, here are the confirmed movies currently in production and their tentative release dates as of July 2024's San Diego Comic-Con panel.

Captain America: Brave New World

Release Date: February 14, 2025

The first MCU movie to kick off the 2025 slate will be Captain America: Brave New World. Following The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series on Disney+, Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson has finally taken up the mantle of Captain America. Now he's getting his own solo film.

The synopsis reads:

"Anthony Mackie returns as the high-flying hero Sam Wilson, who’s officially taken up the mantle of Captain America. After meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident. He must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.
"

We finally got our first look at Captain America: Brave New World, which had reportedly undergone extensive (and expensive) reshoots, and the tralier did not disappoint!

Thunderbolts*

Release Date: May 2, 2025

Our first major team up of the year is Thunderbolts*. Directed by Jake Schreier and written by Eric Pearson, the general story follows a group of antiheroes who go on missions for the American government.

Production on Thunderbolts* has been delayed numerous times, but it looks like Marvel Studios is finally ready to commit to the film. The movie was spotlighted during the SDCC '24 Hall H presentation with marvel providing a tongue-in-cheek synopsis that reads:

""Marvel Studios, and a crew of indie veterans, who definitely sold out, present 'Thunderbolts*,' an irreverent team-up featuring depressed assassin Yelena Belova alongside the MCU’s least anticipated band of misfits.""

While a trailer hasn't been released online, fans in attendance were able to see some early footage from the film which stars Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr / Ghost, Wyatt Russell as John Walker / U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov / Taskmaster, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Release Date: July 25, 2025

The highly anticipated Fantastic Four movie finally received an official title. The Fantastic Four: First Steps will arrive in theaters on July 25, 2025.

While there have been numerous movies about Marvel's First Family, all have been pretty underwhelming. Now that Marvel has its beloved franchise back under its banner, hopes are high.

With filming kicking off this week, there was no official trailer shown. However, fans at SDCC '24 were treated to some early test footage, described as such:

""The footage had the tone of a news reel, featuring moments such as Mr. Fantastic speaking to a bored classroom under a banner for “Fantastic Science,” the superhero team’s flying Fantasticar, space suits, a rocket launch and the Thing being featured on a dating show as a mystery contestant. The sequence was capped with a shot of Galactus, the villain of the film."
"

We don't have an official synopsis, but it looks like the plot will revolve around Galactus and Silver Surfer targeting Earth for destruction. It was confirmed that The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be set in a retro-future '60s environment.

Blade

Release Date: November 7, 2025

Marvel's Blade was a no-show at Marvel Studios' SDCC '24 presentation, which begs the question as to whether it wlil actually be released in 2025 or delayed once again. The film's production woes have been well-documented and it currently sems like it's stuck in Hollywood limbo. The film stars Mahershala Ali as the titular character and is targeting an R-rating.

Avengers: Doomsday

Release Date: May 1, 2026

The big reveal at San Diego Comic-Con was Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel is moving on from the Kang storyline and replacing the villain with Doctor Doom. The biggest surprise came when Marvel revealed just who will be playing Doctor Doom in the film: former Tony Stark actor Robert Downey Jr. We're not sure how this will all work in the MCU timeline or how they will explain it, but we're excited!

Avengers: Doomsday will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who also directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Avengers: Secret Wars

May 7, 2027

A year after Avengers: Doomsday, we will get another massive team-up. We don't know much about Avengers: Secret Wars, but this is a massive storyline in the comic books. Seeing it come to life on the big scren is going to be epic.

Other projects tentatively in development

While the above mentioned movies all have confirmed release dates, there are other tentative Marvel movie projects in various stages of production. The list includes:

  • Armor Wars
  • Untitled Spider-Man: No Way Home sequel
  • Untitled Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings sequel
  • Untitled X-Men movie

Regardless of Marvel's recent struggles at the box office, which seem to have turned around thanks to Deadpool & Wolverine, it's clear that Disney is still fully committed to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And they should be; it's a $30 billion franchise.

Just keep in mind, that the release dates above could change, especially with D23 right around the corner.
