Moana 2 just unveiled a new trailer, and there's so much more to enjoy in this surprise sequel!

Disney making a sequel to one of its biggest animated hits is no surprise. What was Disney announcing that Moana 2 would drop on Thanksgiving of 2024, with almost no advance warning that it was even in development. The plot details have been tight, but it should be another great adventure of Moana (Auli'i Cravalho) going on a quest to save her people and aided once more by the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson).

The new trailer has shown more of the story and action and a few interesting things to note as we prepare for this big sequel!

Moana's little sister

The film is set three years after the first so it makes sense things have changed for Moana and her family on their small island. That includes how she now has a little sister, Simea. The pair look to get along great and Moana taking on a teacher role telling her sister of the oceans and her past adventures.

The idea Moana passes her passion for exploring and even becoming a new Wayfinder is quite intriguing. It's likely the character gets more screen time, a classic little kid comic relief for the story and another reason to be excited for this sequel.

The purple storm

The movie shows more of a mysterious villain who seems to take the form of a purple storm with lightning. It seems to be targeting Moana, calling her the "Wayfinder" and the idea she's the target of these attacks, not Maui. The trailer shows more of huge storms striking the oceans, indicating it's going to be the entire world under threat.

Just who or what this entity is will likely be the key plot point. It could be some rogue goddess or witch acting up yet far more sinister than the first film. If that was about redeeming a wayward goddess, this looks to be a fight against actual evil to push Moana to her limit.

A family affair?

The first movie was pretty much just Moana and Maui with their animal helpers. The trailer here indicates we're going to see a lot more of Moana's family involved. Some shots include her reuniting with the ghost of her grandmother, and obviously, Simea will take part.

The trailer shows what appears to be Moana's family joining her, including them tied to a mast during a raging storm to aid Moana. They also seem to be taking part in a fight scene, so while the first movie was about Moana's journey, this one looks to be a full family affair. That's a great turn to have them see what a heroine she is and how important family is for the character.

We'll see more of Oceania

The first movie touched on this fantasy aquatic world and the sequel looks to go even deeper. The opening has Moana racing around her island home, showcasing more of the area with the cliffs and beaches. There's also the hint that to stop this threat, Moana has to sail further than others and she and Maui are shown reacting in amazement to some fantastic area.

It's probable that many of the locations are being held secretly as a surprise to viewers. That includes the hint that Maui's tattoos may contain clues to some locations, almost like a map in itself. He still looks the same fun character yet a bit more tempered this time around. Exploring more of this world will be a terrific way to make this sequel shine.

Moana needs rescuing

The trailer climaxes with Moana and her crew facing the Kakamora, those wacky coconut-masked pirates. It looks like a repeat of the first film, with Moana showing off her fighting skills, only for one pirate to get the drop on her, hitting her with tranquilizer darts. Combined with a shot of her falling into a large whirlpool, it appears Moana is in some serious danger and will need rescuing. While Maui is the obvious candidate there, her family may also end up helping out and providing a lot more great action.

Hopefully, we get another trailer before the release to show the storyline off but this new peek gives more hope that Moana 2 will be just as great as the first film for a wonderful experience.

Moana 2 premieres in theaters November 27, 2024.
