It’s official! Inside Out 2 is now the highest-grossing animated movie both domestically and worldwide. Last July 27, the megahit Pixar sequel exceeded fellow Pixar sequel Incredibles 2 as the top-grossing animated film in both US and Canada with $610,906,731.
With its consistent performance in the box office, Inside Out 2 will exceed Disney-adjacent blockbusters Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Marvel’s The Avengers. Though, it might need to do $24 million more to beat last year’s megahit Barbie. But given its staying power to withstand blockbusters like Despicable Me 4, Twisters and, most recently, Deadpool & Wolverine, it will certainly have a chance.
Outside of the domestic box office, the movie surpassed Top Gun: Maverick with $1.5 billion. It is now $15 million away from reaching the top 10 highest-grossing movies of all time, replacing that spot from The Avengers.
To how much more Inside Out 2 can gain in the box office continues to be seen. It still has Japan on its sight, with an anticipating August 1 release. For comparison, the first Inside Out earned $32,956,437 in the territory. If Inside Out 2 performed in the same manner, if not more, it would solidify the tenth spot of the highest-grossing movies of all time, right below 2019’s The Lion King.
The outstanding success of Inside Out 2 both in US/Canada and worldwide is a huge testament to the multi-generational, multi-global appeal of the movie’s affectionate story and world-building. Many people reconnected with Riley’s emotions from the first Inside Out, and they also gelled with the new emotions, composing of Anxiety, Envy, Ennui and Embarrassment. Or perhaps, numerous fans who speculated of any follow-up to Inside Out were satisfied on the results.
Regardless, Inside Out 2 proves that, with the best story and crew, they can tread the line between genuine storytelling and franchise expansion. Here is kudos to their Disney+ spinoff project.
