Disney Animation has released a new still from the upcoming Moana 2 film, which is due to hit theaters in just a few months.

The latest image features Moana front-and-center, looking as confident and determined as ever. With her ship oar in hand, she appears to be sailing away from an island — and perhaps a creature as well.

I'm not sure exactly what it is creeping up the rocks of the island, but it looks like a pair of eyes are watching her sale away. Is this some sort of sea creature that she she got the best of just moments ago?

Honestly, we don't know — and that goes for the entire premise of Moana 2. Since announcing the surprise sequel back in February, Disney hasn't really shared much about Moana 2's plot.

The latest press release accompanying the image teases that it's been three years since her first voyage, and that "Moana is on an expansive journey in search of people beyond the shores of Motunui."

"Joined by Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced."

Aside from this top level synopsis, we don't know know much about Moana 2. We do know, however, that it originated as a series that was originally aimed for Disney+. But at some point, Disney — perhaps under pressure from Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger — turned it into a full-fledged sequel film that's scheduled to release in theaters on November 27, 2024.

The sequel will be directed by Dave Derrick Jr. with music by Grammy® winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina. Both Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will be returning to reprise their roles as Moana and Maui, respectively.
