Elemental is now in theaters and marks Pixar's highly anticipated return to the big screen since last year's Lightyear flop. Many were hoping Elemental would be a nice rebound for the struggling animation studio but early indications are another potential box office bomb for Disney.
As of Saturday morning, Elemental is currently projected for an opening weekend gross between $28 and $32 million. We could be looking at the lowest debut ever for a Pixar movie.
Reviews for Elemental aren't overly negative but it's 75% on Rotten Tomatoes is among the lowest for Pixar films, ranking around The Good Dinosaur -- widely considered to be Pixar's biggest box office bomb ever. With Elemental struggling to recapture audiences, many are already looking ahead to see what's next for the once powerhouse animation studio.
Pixar has five movies on the calendar right now, but only two are titled
As of this writing, there are currently five Pixar projects in development, but only two of them are titled: Elio and Inside Out 2.
Elio is an original movie from Pixar, which may raise some flags as Disney's originals have failed to attract audiences. A teaser for the movie was revealed earlier this week, and it looks cute though I do wonder if it will have massive appeal. Elio is currently scheduled to premiere on March 1, 2024 in theaters.
Looking a bit further down the line, Inside Out 2 is scheduled to release on June 14, 2024. This will be a sequel to the 2015 film that follows the emotions inside the mind of a young girl named Riley. While we don't have a ton of details, we do know that the sequel will pick up with Riley as a teenager and a "new set of personified emotions." Amy Poehler will reprise her role as Joy.
Right now these are the only two titled projects at Pixar. The three untitled movies are due out on June 13, 2025, March 6, 2026 and June 19, 2026. We do know that Toy Story 5 is currently planned, so it's possible that one of these untitled slots is for that.
