Remember Win or Lose? Pixar's first long form original series was originally supposed to arrive on Disney+ back in 2023. But it was quietly delayed and bumped to 2024, with no official word from Disney.
At D23 this weekend, it was finally announced that Win or Lose will premiere on Disney+ this holiday season. The exact release date is December 6, 2024.
Win or Lose is a long form original series that follows the intertwined stories of eight different characters as they prepare for their championship softball game. Each episode will be told through the perspective of a different character in the lead-up to the big game. From insecure kids to helicopter parents and even a lovesick umpire, the stories will be a mix of funny, emotional and "uniquely animated."
The series is directed, written, and executive produced by Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates, with David Lally as producer.
Win or Lose was originally planned as as a follow-up to Pixar's Elemental, which became an unexpected box office hit after a slow start. After a disastrous opening, positive reviews and audience word of mouth ultimately led to a drastic turnaround. The film ultimately grossed nearly $500 million worldwide.
It was a remarkable turnaround for the film, and the studio, after Disney's animated film were struggling at the box office. Elemental was instead followed by Inside Out 2, the highly anticipated coming-of-age sequel to 2015's Inside Out.
Directed by Kelsey Mann, Inside Out 2 was both a critical and commercial success. With $1.6 billion worldwide, Inside Out 2 has become Pixar's highest-grossing movie of all-time, surpassing Frozen II.
With momentum now fully on Pixar's side, I'm sure many are looking forward to the stories that will be told through Win or Lose.
In other news coming out of D23, Pixar also dated Toy Story 5 for Summer 2026, while also announced a new Disney+ series inspired by Inside Out, called Dream Productions, coming in 2025.
