It's time to return to the world of Descendants. Disney has released the first trailer for Descendants: The Rise of Red, which pushes the franchise in a new direction!

Premiering on the Disney Channel in 2015, Descendants was set in a world where the classic Disney villains were defeated and exiled to an island. Years later, Belle and the Beast's son decides to invite four of the villainous offspring to attend Auradon Prep, the school for fairy tale heroes. That included Maleficent's daughter Mal (Dove Cameron), the Evil Queen's daughter Evie (Sofia Carson), Jafar's son Jay (Booboo Stewart) and Cruella de Vil's son Carlos (Cameron Boyce).

At first, the four go in with a plan from Maleficent (Kristen Chenoweth) to steal a magical wand. However, the kids realize they don't want to follow in their parents' footsteps to join the heroes.

The movie was a hit, with two sequels following. One introduced Uma (China Anne McClain), the daughter of Ursula and a rival of Mal's. Tragically, Boyce unexpectedly died in 2019 just before Descendants 3 premiered with the film dedicated to him. A 2021 animated special featured the wedding of Mal and Ben, with the cast reprising their voices.

Now, the property is coming back with a new spinoff film focusing on Uma and promising more unique characters coming in.

The brief teaser has Uma's voiceover explaining how Mal left her in charge of Auradon Prep and she's going to open it up for more kingdoms, including Wonderland. That leads to a cameo from Kylie Cantrall as the titular character, Princess Red, the daughter of the Queen of Hearts.

It's a brief teaser but does hint that the magic is back and that Red may have her own dark plans for the kingdom. She'll be teaming up with Chloe (Malia Baker), the daughter of Cinderella, with Brandy reprising her role from the 1997 ABC Cinderella movie.

Speaking to People Magazine, McClain shared how she was worried about returning to the saga but it filled the pain felt from Boyce's passing.

"I was apprehensive to revisit the Descendants world at first, because losing Cam was the first heartbreak I've ever experienced. But once I saw how excited the new generation of kids were, it reminded me of myself when we created the original films."

The movie is set for release on Disney Channel this summer and may be the start of a new era for the Descendants property and continue one of Disney's most magical series.
