Star Wars: Skeleton Crew trailer is giving big Goonies in space vibes

Growing up as a child of the '90s I was blessed with timeless adventure and coming-of-age stories like The Goonies and E.T. Perhaps that's why I'm so drawn to Disney and Lucasfilm's upcoming series, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.

It's an adventure in the galaxy far, far away that I never knew I needed. And now that I've seen the trailer, I want it right now.

From the opening seconds of the official trailer , we hear a sound reminiscent of those 80's era Amblin Entertainment movies. We're then hit with the line: "Don't you ever want to do anything exciting?"

"What if we could go anywhere we want in the whole galaxy. A real adventure. No more pretend."

Then we see a shot of these kids walking through the woods. I mean, come on, could the set up be any more perfect?

If Lucasflim was going for a specific '80s adventure vibe, they've absolutely nailed it. It's something I haven't felt since that original season of Stranger Things in 2016.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew will tell the story of four kids searchign for their home planet after getting lost in the galaxy. The trailer teases some of the strange aliens and dangeorus planets they'll encounter while on their adventure. But perhaps the biggest reveal in the trailer is Jude Law's character, Jod Na Nawood, who it turns out is a Force user.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew was created by Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts and screenwriter Chris Ford. Watts previously described the series tone as "an adventure."

"We wanted it to be a lot of fun," he told Entertainment Weekly last year. "But of course, along with adventure comes the downside of it, which is danger. And when the kids are in danger, it's extra fraught. So we played with that, but overall we wanted it to be just a fun adventure."

Beyond Watts and Ford, there are other big names attached to the series. In addition to Watts, the series will feature episodes directed by Lee Isaac Chung (Twisters), Bryce Dallas Howard (The Mandalorian), David Lowery (The Green Knight), Jake Schreier (Marvel's Thunderbolts), and the Daniels (Everything Everywhere All At Once).

My only concern with Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is the fact that it's a Disney+ series. I felt this way about The Acolyte and its bite-sized episodes, but I feel like many of these Star Wars Disney+ series would be served better as full-fledged theatrical releases.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew will premiere on December 3rd on Disney+.
