It's been a while since we've had a decently scary Alien movie. The last film in the sci-fi horror franchise was 2017's Alien: Covenant, a sequel to the 2012 film Prometheus.

Both of these movies served as prequel stories to Ridley Scott's 1979 film Alien. While they received decent-enough reviews and were fairly successful at the box office, they didn't really give us that traditional Alien horror feel.

That's part of the reason I'm so excited for Alien: Romulus. The seventh installment in the long-running franchise is directed by Fede Alvarez, a veteran director with plenty of experience in the horror genre.

Alvarez helmed 2013's Evil Dead, 2016's Don't Breathe, and 2018's The Girl in the Spider's Web, so he has plenty of experience scaring and thrilling audiences. And this expertise shows in the trailers of Alien: Romulus. It genuinely looks like a terrifying movie and a return to the franchise's horror roots — right down to the "In space, no one can hear you scream" tagline from the 1979 movie.

Alien: Romulus is scheduled to release in theaters on August 16, 2024 by 20th Century Fox (which is now owned by The Walt Disney Company, in case you were wondering why we're talking about it here). Despite it still being a few weeks away, tickets for the film are now on sale. The announcement was made through the release of a new 30-second spot that gives you a perfect sense of dread and tension that awaits.

Seriously, this movie looks like the return to Alien horror that fans have been so desperately craving. Unfortunately, the official trailer seems to have revealed quite a few intense moments from the film, so I'd encourage anyone interested in seeing this movie to just steer clear of it.

In addition to the TV spot, there have also been numerous posters released, highlighting the various theaters that will be showing the film. My personal favorite is the one that highlights 4DX.

Set between the events of 1979's Alien and 1986's Aliens, Alien: Romulus follows a group of young space colonists who, while scavenging a derelict space station, come face to face with the most terrifying life form in space. The film hits theaters on August 16th.
