It just seems a cash grab
It's no secret Disney has had a rough time at the box office in 2023. With a few projects put off, they need something big for moviegoers. To push this movie so quickly for Thanksgiving (which has already seen a few box office flops in the past) just strikes as Disney trying to win over moviegoers with a familiar property rather than making a truly good movie.
This ties to the old argument on how Disney should be less focused on franchises and sequels and create more original tales that made them so successful. With a movie like this coming out of nowhere, it strikes as a desperate move by Disney for short-term success rather than looking to the future.
Maybe the concerns will be for naught, and Moana 2 will become a surprise success. But it's also easy to worry that a movie with such unique origins and pushed so quickly can fail to be as wonderful as the first film and puts more pressure on Moana 2 to be something magical.
