Arriving in theaters this weekend is Greta Gerwig's highly anticipated live-action Barbie movie. Based on the popular toy doll, Barbie figures to be a massive box office success.
But when the theatrical run is over, you may be wondering where you'll be able to stream it. Given that the movie is based on an incredibly popular kids' brand, you would probably associate it with being a Disney movie and therefore it would come to Disney+. Well, that is not the case.
Will the Barbie movie come to Disney+?
First off, Barbie is a toy from Mattel, not Disney. But more importantly, the film is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures which assures it will not be coming to Disney+ now or in the foreseeable future.
Because it's a Warner Bros. Pictures movie, Barbie will only be available to stream on Max (formerly HBO Max). Warner Bros. hasn't announced when you'll be able to watch it digitally or via streaming, but many predict it should be available sometime in mid-September or early October.
It all depends on how the movie performs at the box office and right now it's looking like a smash hit. The Greta Gerwig-helmed film already raked in $22.3M in previews, topping the likes ofGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's $17.3M.
To recap, Barbie, despite being a major brand that appeals to children (and collectors), is not owned by Disney. The movie wasn't made or distributed by Disney. So, therefore, it will not be coming to Disney+.
Iff you want to watch the movie right now though, the only place to do so is in theaters. It's not available on any streaming platform or digital service and probably won't be for at least the next 45 days or possibly longer if it has legs in theaters.
