Sony sets Summer 2026 release date for Spider-Man 4
During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, actor Tom Holland confirmed that Spider-Man 4 is happening. He didn't say too much about the upcoming film, but did reveal that shooting should begin next summer.
Shortly after his appearance, Sony confirmed that Spider-Man 4 is indeed happening and even announced a release date.
The highly anticipated fourth film in the hit Marvel franchise will release in theaters on July 20, 2026. The movie will be helmed by Shangi-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton, who will reportedly be taking over for the Russo brothers after they moved to the next Avengers movie.
Looking at Marvel's release slate, the new Spider-Man 4 movie will put it in theaters just two months after Avengers: Doomsday. It's a similar release patter to Spider-Man: Far From Home, which was released in theaters shortly after Avengers: Endgame.
The most recent film in Tom Holland's Spider-Man franchise was Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was released in December 2021.
The fourth film is especially going to be interesting in that No Way Home ended on a bit of a sad note -- with Peter protecting the multiverse by erasing himself from everyone's memory. The end of the film saw Peter contemplate reintroducing himself to MJ and Ned, but ultimately decided against it.
For those confused as to why Sony announced the release date of Spider-Man 4 it's because Sony actually owns the film rights to the Marvel character. However, Sony and Marvel Studios struck a deal to share the Spider-Man character between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Sony's standalone Spider-Man films, which I think has been beneficial to both movie studios.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is the highest-grossing Spider-Man movie of all time with $1.9 billion at the global box office. Spider-Man: Far From Home is second with $1.1 billion worldwide.
