If there was one character who could be considered the icon of The Phantom Menace, it's Darth Maul. The devilish and deadly Sith Lord from Episode I has had a long and sordid history, but big things are in store for this Star Wars fan favorite.
Maul has murdered Jedi, survived bifurcation, and terrified countless viewers, but Lucasfilm isn't done with him yet. At this year's Star Wars Day, the studio announced that the character would be resurrected for a new animated series, and it's set to be a sinister smash!
Darth Maul: Shadow Lord
Lucasfilm Animation has brought new tales from the galaxy far, far away to life for years, bringing a fresh perspective to familiar settings, struggles, and characters. Although the Clone Wars have ended, there's still one fearsome figure lurking in the darkness... and he just got a solo series.
It was announced at Star Wars Day's animation panel that Darth Maul would return in an all-new animated solo spinoff, Darth Maul: Shadow Lord. Helmed by Dave Filoni and Athena Portillo with creative input from George Lucas himself, the project promises to be a spectacular Sith story with all the dark details.
Although the trailer was exclusive to those who attended the celebration, The Hollywood Reporter shared the following summary.
"The show, which will tell the story of Maul teaching an apprentice, will debut in 2026. Sam Witwer, who voiced the Maul character in previous animated series, will reprise the part."
If you're a regular Star Wars buff like this writer, you'll already know that the most logical timeline for this series to occur is between Clone Wars and Rebels, meaning Filoni will be right in his wheelhouse when bringing this story to life. Moreover, fans can expect a darker and more sinister tone to the new entry.
The galaxy is home to a legion of heroes, but its villains are easily some of its most iconic characters. Darth Vader was a tough act to follow, but Maul came on screen swinging (with a lightsaber staff in hand). All we can do now is wait and see what happens next in Darth Maul: Shadow Lord
