It’s time to get Freaky again as the first trailer for Freakier Friday has hit and taking us back to the 2000s for another Disney sequel.
The “nostalgia sequel” has been a big trend in Hollywood lately. Studios have enjoyed producing sequels to past films of the 1990s or 2000s with the same actors reprising their roles amid new stories. They can range from the Scream series to Ghostbusters: Afterlife and more and are an easy way to get fans nostalgic.
Now, Disney is leaping into it with Freakier Friday. The 2003 film was one of the bigger hits of that year, another adaptation of the best-selling book about a mother and daughter who swap bodies on a Friday.
In this case, Jamie Lee Curtis played Tess, a psychologist clashing with her punk rock daughter Anna, played by Lindsay Lohan. Thanks to a magical fortune cookie, the two swap bodies and get insight into each other’s lives.
The movie was a box office smash that’s grown in popularity over the years. Lohan’s career has seen its ups and downs while Curtis has continued to succeed, including winning an Oscar for 2022's Everything Everywhere All At Once. Now, at last, the pair are reuniting for Freakier Friday.
The first trailer is now here and shows that the body swapping isn’t what you might expect, despite the nostalgic vibe!
Who’s swapping in Freakier Friday?
The trailer opens with the older Tess and Anna talking to a fortune teller on their odd experience. They’re wary when the woman says they need to “learn another lesson” and try to brush it off.
We then get the scene of the pair waking up the next morning and screaming at their reflections. But here’s the twist: They haven’t swapped with each other this time.
Instead, Anna has now switched bodies with her own daughter, Harper (Julia Butters) while Tess has traded with Lily (Sophia Hammons), the daughter of Anna’s new boyfriend Eric (Manny Jacinto). That’s a big turn on the original, even though we get callbacks (such as Harper and Lily trying to smack their bodies together with Tess and Anna telling them that doesn’t work).
The trailer (set to Chappel Roan’s “Hot to Go”) shows more of the fun to expect as the quartet tries to live each other’s lives. That includes Lily in Tess’ body playing tennis in a weird getup and driving a fancy car, some biking, a track meet and more. There's also a concert with Lohan once more rocking the guitar.
We also get a few shots of returning faces like Mark Harmon as Tess’ husband, Chad Michael Murray, Stephen Tobolowsky as oddball teacher Mr. Bates and even an appearance by what looks like Lohan’s The Parent Trap co-star Elaine Hendrix!
The movie appears to be doing the “nostalgia sequel” right, using the original stars alongside some new characters, the same interesting dynamic of mothers and daughters understanding each other better, and some fine comedy to boot.
So circle August 8 on your calendars as Freakier Friday is set to be a bigger romp than the first!
