Disney announces big release dates for Freaky Friday 2 and Lilo & Stitch
Expect the summer of 2025 to be a big one, with Disney announcing two huge live-action projects are coming that year!
Disney movies have been having their share of problems in the last year. There have been too many high-profile duds like Haunted Mansion, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Wish. Even the MCU has faltered with The Marvels an outright bomb amid behind-the-scenes turmoil.
It’s not helped by the 2023 Hollywood strikes halting productions, and Disney has been forced to rearrange its slate. However, the success of Inside Out 2 has restored confidence in the company. They’ll be keeping that up with Moana 2 coming out at Thanksgiving and Mufasa for Christmas.
Disney had already rearranged their slate as Snow White, intended for this fall, will now premiere on March 21, 2025. Meanwhile, Pixar’s Elio, which was supposed to come this past June, was pushed an entire year to June 13.
Now, Disney has announced two big movies are getting dates that look set to lay claim to restoring their summer movie glory!
The new Disney Summer 2025 entries
As reported by Deadline, the live-action Lilo & Stitch will premiere on May 23, 2025. It’s the latest live-action remake, this time of the beloved 2002 animated film. It will be opening opposite the next Mission: Impossible entry, which was to debut this past summer but was pushed back due to production issues, as well as concerns about the disappointing box office of the last film.
This means Disney has a big Memorial Day weekend family film set to go, which is always a good time for them. The long holiday weekend should help the box office and win over moviegoers.
Also, Freakier Friday will premiere on August 8. The sequel to the 2003 hit reunites Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as mother and daughter who once more endure a body swap, this time also involving Lohan’s daughter.
This is almost the exact same date the original movie had in 2003 and it works as August is a lighter time for blockbusters. The only competition so far is the yet-untitled Paul Thomas Anderson-Leonardo DiCaprio film from Warner Bros. Thus, Friday will have a much wider window to build on the box office.
Other big movies in 2025 will include Tron: Ares on October 10 and Zootopia 2 on November 26. Disney is ready to establish its box office power in 2025, and these sequels should add up to great money for the coffers.
