One of Disney+’s biggest recent revivals has gotten a big spot of renewal news!
Fans of Disney+ may love their shows but are wary of getting too invested. That’s because the streamer has a bad habit of canceling some shows after just one season. That includes some cult series like American Born Chinese, Renegade Nell, and Willow.
It’s also big-time shows that get the axe with Star Wars: The Acolyte. So it’s a bigger deal when a show gets a second season now.
Thankfully, it’s happened for one of the streamer’s bigger successes of 2024-25. The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Wizards Beyond Waverly Place will be getting a second season following a great run on both Disney Channel and Disney+.
The original Wizards of Waverly Place ran on Disney Channel from 2007 to 2012 and launched Selena Gomez to stardom. She played Alex Russo, a mischievous young witch competing with her brother Justin (David Henrie) to become a top wizard.
The sequel series premiered on Disney Channel in 2024 with Justin now living with a mortal family. Alex returns with Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown), a powerful witch who needs guidance. Justin reluctantly takes charge of Billie, revealing his past as a wizard to his family and realizing the girl is tied into a possible coming apocalypse.
Henrie himself talked in a statement about how happy he was to get a second year.
“I’m overwhelmed by all the love for the series and ready to keep serving this new generation of Wizards fans with more Russo magic, while continuing to deliver a big warm hug to the original fan! So many surprises in store for this second season. It’s going to be big, so stay tuned!”
It’s a big move for the show, and fans are hopeful that more will come!
What could season 2 be about?
With mild spoilers for the first season of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, much of the season involved Justin teaching Billie while his family discovered his wizarding past. One turn was how Justin lost his job as headmaster of Wiz Tech after an embarrassing incident, only for Billie to discover Justin had been set up by a jealous friend. That led to Justin being offered a job with the Magical Tribunal.
The season 1 finale had Billie wrongly blamed for magic going wild and running away. It turned out that many of the events of the season were the work of Silas Evilini, the son of Dr. Evilini, an old foe of the Russos. During the battle, Justin’s sons Roman (Alkaio) and Milo (Max Matenko) absorbed energy that also gave them magical powers, which they used to help defeat Silas.
Minister Bigelow McFigglehorn dropped in to announce that now the Russo family had multiple wizards, there would once more be a competition for the family wizard. She then took the amulet Silas had used, with the audience seeing her eyes glowing red.
So, season 2 will focus on Justin teaching his sons how to control their magic as the pair will no doubt cause chaos with their mom, Giada (Mimi Gianopulos), trying to handle this madness. It will also touch on McFigglehorn and her secret plans.
It’s unsure if Gomez will appear on the show again, given her busy schedule with the hit series Only Murders in the Building. But it’s possible she can make another cameo.
Production is expected to begin soon, with the second season coming later in 2025. So Disney fans can be pleased one of their most magical shows is coming back for more wild misadventures!
