To say that Bluey is a big deal would be a grand and glorious understatement, as the show has grown beyond just its family of cartoon dogs. As a new season and full-length feature film from Disney looms on the horizon, many can't help but wonder what could possibly come next.
One of the biggest concerns about the show's future involves Bluey creator Joe Brumm stepping down from the TV series to work on the film. That's not necessarily bad news, and it's probably the best move he could do. Still, what happens after those credits roll?
An adult series from Bluey's creator? It just might work!
It's often been said that Bluey is a parenting show that kids can watch too (and other such sentiments), but could it actually be laying the groundwork for a Brumm post-Bluey? Joe Brumm recently wrote a letter to the fanbase explaining his departure, but that doesn't mean he's down and out.
Look at what he says to the fanbase in the following statement from Bluey's official blog.
"Bluey has completely changed my life. It’s been an immensely satisfying thing to be a part of, more than I can really put into words. To walk away from it while it’s at such a height will seem crazy to some but, for now, I am finding it difficult to reach back genuinely into that four to six year old world and write authentically."
If what he says is true, and it's about finding that four to six year old mindset, it might mean that we could see either Bluey and Bingo growing up past that age or a completely new series from Brumm altogether. Stranger things have happened, and it's not like Brumm doesn't have it in him.
The creator has previously shared how much The Simpsons influenced some of his writing, so would a Simpson-esque alternative to Bluey really be that far away? In this writer's opinion, it's the next logical step.
It might be the case that after Bluey's movie is finished, Joe Brumm could bring us a whole new adult series. If he truly wants to keep the mass of grownup fans that already love Bluey, he'll utilize similar themes shared with the beloved blue dog.
Brumm has already proven that he can write for adult audiences on a truly emotional level without relying heavily on lewd or crude material (sorry, Homer). It would be completely in character to see him create another slice-of-life series that speaks to older viewers all the way.
Of course, this is all pure speculation. However, just because one door closes, somewhere a window of opportunity might be opening.
Fans of all ages can still enjoy Bluey, Bingo, and all their friends on Disney+.
