Disney is using the hype surrounding Moana 2 to remind us of another Pixar film on the calendar: Elio. Originally due out earlier this year, the movie was pushed back to June 2025. While we've still got a few months to go until its release, Pixar has shared a new teaser trailer that will probably be attached to the previews of Moana 2.

Elio is a comedic misadventure. But perhaps more importantly, it's original idea from Pixar. While Disney continues to pump out sequels, reboots, and live-action remakes of its classics, Elios feels like something fresh, something we haven't seen before. That alone is worth at least giving it some consideration.

And now check out the trailer, which has already garnered positive feedback.

There's something about Elios that's just so relatable. Perhaps it's the inner child in all of us. He's a space fanatic with an active imagination. Wasn't that all of us at one point?

The movie looks charming and fantastical. It looks like it could be one of those movies that appeals to both children and adults. And, in case I didn't stress this enough earlier, it looks original! For all the complaining I see about Toy Story 5 and Frozen 3, this is the type of original ideas we need to support in theaters to encourage studios to continue to take risks.

After a string of misses, Pixar has been on a nice little run of late. Elemental, which was written off almost immediately after its disappointing opening, made a huge comeback. Positive word of mouth resulted in the film eventually grossing $400 million worldwide.

Inside Out 2, which was Pixar's most recent release, was a massive hit. It set numerous records while on its way to become the fastest animated movie to reach $1 billion at the global box office. Positive reviews from critics and fans alike helped push it to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time with over $1.6 billion globally.

I don't know if a movie like Elio can pull those kind of numbers, but hopefully it does well enough to encourage Pixar to continue to take risks on new ideas and adventures. Elio opens in theaters on June 13, 2025.
