Get ready to “Let It Go” again as Disney has announced that not one but two big Frozen projects are coming! Find out what and when!
Over a decade after it premiered, Frozen has gone from another Disney animated hit into a full-fledged phenomenon. The original was the highest-grossing animated film ever before Inside Out 2 and Disney has made literally billions off the merchandising. A 2019 sequel only added to that power.
The franchise has since blossomed in so many ways from an Epcot ride to the characters used in the Once Upon a Time TV series to a Broadway musical. So it’s little shock that Disney is planning a third film, which was believed to be coming out in 2026.
Now, Disney has confirmed that Frozen 3 will hit theaters on November 24, 2027. It makes total sense that they picked Thanksgiving weekend, which is a long favorite time for Disney holiday releases, and the first two movies opening on the same weekend.
Plot details are tight although as D23, filmmaker Jennifer Lee showed concept art of the sisters on horseback. She hinted the plot will follow the second film of Elsa discovering more of her place as a “fifth spirit” who bridges the human world of Arrendelle with protecting the forests. It’s likely the cast (especially Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell) will return to reprise their roles.
While that’s a big deal, it’s not the only big Frozen project coming to Disney fans.
The Frozen Musical coming to Disney+
With the show beloved for its music, it’s no surprise Disney wanted to make a full Broadway musical version of it. It opened on Broadway in 2018, mixing the movie’s songs with new numbers and soon a huge hit. Sadly, like many Broadway productions, it closed in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and never reopened.
However, the show has had a successful touring company and is a hit in London’s West End. Now, Disney has confirmed that a filmed version of the production will air on Disney+ in 2025, recorded at Theatre Royal Drury Lane. It stars popular British theater actress Samantha Barks as Elsa and Laura Dawkes as Anna. Barks appeared at D23 to perform "Let It Go" to help promote the release. The show is fun in how it makes the movie work (Olaf presented as a puppet on stage) and expands on story beats like giving Hans his own song.
So fans of Frozen (and there are many) are going to be happy to hear there’s more coming to continue one of Disney’s all-time greatest franchises.
