The reports of the death of Disney movies at the box office have been greatly exaggerated. Here’s a quick look at just how huge the debut of Inside Out 2 was!

Disney movies had a very rough 2023 with several disappointments, outright flops and for the first time in a decade, no movie cracking the billion-dollar mark. That included Pixar’s Elemental, which did find box office legs but still failed to make back its budget.

So the pressure was high for Inside Out 2, the sequel to Pixar’s 2016 Oscar-winning hit. It’s tougher given the overall box office in 2024 has been pretty rough with the summer movie season marked more by flops like The Fall Guy and Furiosa than any successes.

Thus, Hollywood is buzzing over Inside Out 2, which is smashing all expectations. At first projected for perhaps an $80 million opening weekend, the movie instead rocked everyone, making $155 million domestically and nearly $300 million worldwide. In short, it’s outgrossed the entire domestic run of Elemental in one weekend.

Much of the global take comes from Mexico and Latin America and reports Latino audiences and walk-up buys made up much of the domestic run. It’s the biggest opening for any movie since 2023’s Barbie, which ended up with over a billion dollars.

Per Variety, here’s a quick look at all the records Inside Out 2 broke or tied:

  • Biggest opening of the year, overtaking Dune: Part Two ($82.5 million) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($80 million)
  • Only release of 2024, and the first since last July’s Barbie ($162 million), to launch above $100 million
  • Second-largest animated debut of all time, behind 2018’s Pixar sequel Incredibles 2 ($182.7 million), Second-biggest start in Pixar history, ahead of 2016’s Finding Dory ($135 million) and 2019’s Toy Story 4 ($120 million) and behind only 2018’s Incredibles 2
  • Fourth-best opening for a PG movie after 2019’s The Lion King ($191 million), Incredibles 2 and 2017’s Beauty and the Beast ($174 million)
  • Biggest international opening weekend in history at current exchange rates (and second-biggest at actual exchange rates), surpassing Disney’s 2019 adventure Frozen 2 ($135 million)
  • Second-biggest debut ever in Latin America, behind only Disney’s Marvel Avengers: Endgame
  • Best start of all time in smaller markets including Colombia, Turkey, and Paraguay — and among the top five in Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Greece and Peru
  • Imax’s fourth-biggest animated opening (excluding China) with $3.5 million.

The movie’s success has been a boon not just for Disney but movie theaters in general. It follows the opening of Bad Boys Ride Or Die, the fourth movie in the Will Smith-Martin Lawrence buddy cop film series, which has so far grossed over $212 million globally.

AMC Theaters CEO Adam Aron openly thanked both films for bringing folks back to cinemas.

"Once again, the moviegoing public has demonstrated that the magic of the movies and the theatrical experience is alive and powerful. While at first glance Inside Out 2 and Bad Boys: Ride Or Die appear to be very different films, they share a strong crossover in that they both were made specifically for the big screen and expertly marketed to a theatrical moviegoing audience. The results of those efforts were in full force this weekend. We extend our gratitude to the filmmakers of Inside Out 2 and Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, and to our studio partners at Disney and Sony Pictures for delivering these incredible films to moviegoing audiences. Most of all, we thank our guests for choosing to see these wonderful movies on the huge screens, with terrific sound, and in ever so comfortable seats featured by AMC."

It’s likely Inside Out 2 will keep on top of the box office in its second weekend as the next big film on the docket is A Quiet Place: Day One on June 27 and then Despicable Me 4 on the 4th of July.

As it is, Inside Out 2 is just what Disney and Pixar needed to restore their box office clout and juice things for theaters, which is great news Hollywood desperately needed.

Inside Out 2 now in theaters.
