Get ready for another Star Wars adventure on the big screen as Lucasfilm has just announced the title and filming start for the anticipated The Mandalorian movie.

When Disney+ launched in 2019, a big draw was The Mandalorian, the first live-action Star Wars series. Set five years after Return of the Jedi, the show focuses on the title character, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), a member of the legendary clan of armored warriors that included Boba Fett. He works as a bounty hunter in a galaxy adjusting to the fall of the Empire.

The first episode ended with Din rescuing a child who, quickly nicknamed “Baby Yoda,” became an instant sensation. Eventually named Grogu, the child and the Mandalorian become an unlikely pair in adventures.

The show has been a smash in its three-season run, bringing in new factors of the Star Wars mythology. It’s also been hailed for live-action versions of popular characters like Cad Bane and the heroes of the animated Rebels series.

Its popularity gave birth to spin-offs The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka. While fans have been anticipating a fourth season, it looks like the plans are going to be even bigger.

What is The Mandalorian movie?

Lucasfilm confirmed the rumors that a movie titled The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to begin filming later this year. Even better, it’ll be directed by Jon Favreau, the creator of the series.

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” Favreau said in a statement. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

“Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen,” Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy added.

There’s no word on what the plotline will be. However, it’s been hinted that Favreau and Dave Filoni are hoping for a movie that would bring together the various live-action Star Wars shows as the New Republic faces the infamous Grand Admiral Thrawn (played by Lars Mikkelsen in Ahsoka).

When will The Mandalorian movie release in theaters?

There are several Star Wars projects in the works, with a new film starring Daisy Ridley as Rey and planned films from Taika Waititi, James Mangold, and Filoni. The current Disney calendar has untitled movies scheduled for May 22, 2026, December 18, 2026, and December 17, 2027.

Granted, Disney has announced a few Star Wars films that were later dropped, but given how popular the Mandalorian and Grogu are and the announcement filming is set to begin later this year, it appears this is on a faster track to reach the big screen sooner.

So it’s not sure if this movie will “bridge” seasons of The Mandalorian or be a big crossover event. However, it looks like fans of The Mandalorian and his sidekick will be able to enjoy watching them on the big screen sometime soon, with production racing ahead.
