Mickey, the mouse, the myth, the legend, has been a prominent piece of pop culture for nearly 100 years. Naturally, his lovable mug has been plastered on everything from T-shirts to plush toys to buses and everything in between. So a popcorn bucket at the theme parks shouldn't be that big of a deal, right?
The popcorn bucket craze has had Disney Parks fans shelling out stacks of cash for elaborate pieces of merch for their snacking habits. The buckets have ranged from cute to absolutely unreal, but the newest iteration is probably the most advanced yet. That might not be a good thing.
A "head-turning" announcement...
On one hand, Disneyland's talking, voice-reacting Mickey Mouse popcorn bucket sounds really cool. On the other, was anyone really asking for a talking, voice-reacting, Mickey Mouse popcorn bucket?
Yes, Mickey is super cute in his little tuxedo with his familiar, sweet, smiling face. However, even this veteran Disney fan has to admit that this is absolutely and unnaturally unsettling. As hard as it might be for some fans to accept, the idea of eating popcorn out of Mickey's caved-in cranium really isn't that appealing.
It might have been different if it were something simpler, like a trick-or-treat bucket, but the fact that the container itself is in a whole carved in the back of his head just doesn't sit well. It also doesn't help that the figure can also talk.
Seriously, the image of Mickey joyfully giggling while someone eats his popcorn brains feels like 32 horrors in one. It begs the question if someone in Disney's marketing department might be a little disturbed.
This also isn't the first time we've seen something needlessly creepy from Disneyland this year. Remember the POV shot from the puppets from "it's a small world?" Oh, it's a world of hopes and a world of fears, alright.
Jokes and riffing aside, the container itself is still really cute, and it's not often we see merch of Mickey in his tux. Even so, this particular item of Disney merch might only be used for snacking for a limited time.
Do you think this thing is needlessly creepy?
