Spider-Man/Peter Parker has been Marvel's golden boy since the '60s, and now he's getting ready to hit Disney+ in a new project. However, it's not just Spidey getting a universal makeover.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man premieres on January 29. 2025, and it looks like the perfect blend of classic comics and modern Marvel. However, fans might be getting more than just a new animated series on Disney+.
Getting back to basics
In the trailer above, we're given a sneak peek at Spider-Man before Tony Stark gave Peter the suped-up suit seen in Captain America: Civil War (2016), but it also comes with several elements seen in the comic books, such as that Jack Kirby style and the white Oscorp suit. Based on that, Disney is fusing more of the source material into the MCU.
This isn't the first time we've seen a resurgence in classic Marvel in recent years, just ask our favorite Mutants in X-Men '97. Disney and Marvel Studios won't stop there, as the upcoming Fantastic Four film also features a back-to-basics approach by incorporating some of the swinging '60s into its vibe.
What looks like a clever aesthetic choice could be Disney's way of reeling things back in after some hit-and-miss performances at the box office. As the Kang Dynasty crumbles and Sam Wilson prepares to lead us into a brave new world, it might be time for the MCU to get back to its roots.
In this writer's opinion, a return to the classic superhero formula is long overdue. James Gunn had it right with his Guardians of the Galaxy series, and Sam Raimi set the bar with his foray into the original Spider-Man films. It's high time Disney took a few pages from the past and brought it into the present.
Any comic book buff worth their salt can easily see the parallels between the designs and direction of the new show with that of Spider-Man's original appearance in Amazing Fantasy, and it's only going to grow from there. After all, Spidey isn't the only one getting back to what works.
At the time of writing, Disney has already put a more comic-accurate swing on Professor X, the Beast, and even Howard the Duck. Spider-Man might just be the first taste of something of this large of a scale, and we could be looking at a whole new piece of the Multiverse.
