Disney's adaptation of Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series was truly an unexpected delight for many fans. The beloved book series made it from the page to a Disney+ original in 2023, but of course, just about anything would have been better than the lackluster films.
Say what you might about some of Disney's adaptations, but its track record for book-to-screen projects is pretty solid. Right on the heels of The Lightning Thief, the studio green-lights book three's adaptation before season two even hits Disney+.
Percy Jackson: The Titan's Curse gets the go-ahead from Disney
Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and a whole pantheon of gods and monsters are on their way back for more adventures, but Disney isn't just stopping at a retelling of The Odyssey in season 2. Instead, the House of Mouse is conspiring with the Fates to look further into the future.
Not even a year before season 2's release date, Disney already gave the ok to a third season of the fan-favorite series. That's not entirely unusual, but it does show that Disney has a lot of faith in the show, and it might also reflect Disney+'s adaptations going forward.
An update from Variety shared that an adaptation of The Titan's Curse was already in development, and Disney TV president Ayo Davis shared a very hopeful update.
Per Davis,
“With season two set to premiere this December, we’re thrilled to announce that Percy’s journey will continue with a third season. Huge thanks to our incredible cast and creative team, our partners at 20th Television, and our visionary and talented producers who continue to bring Rick Riordan’s world to life with such depth and imagination.”
That's certainly reassuring, and it gives many fans hope that Disney might do the same with other YA fantasy books (talking about you, Black Cauldron). However, this also comes off as a bit of a tell for other adaptations.
Similar to how HBO is reworking the Harry Potter series and Greta Gerwig is doing Narnia, it might be the case that Disney's tv and streaming series are resonating better with fans than its films. Moreover, this isn't the first time something like this has happened with a Disney-owned property.
Take a look at how the Star Wars universe has been transformed by series like The Mandalorian and Andor. Longer form projects give filmmakers a chance to do more with the worlds they are given, resulting in more successful and even faithful adaptations.
While we'll still have to wade through the Sea of Monsters before we reach season 3, Disney has definitely given fans more than enough to look forward to before it lands. Until then, we'll have our ears (and swords) up for future developments.
Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians hits Disney+ in December of 2025.
