The MCU is about to unleash its most wicked TV show yet in Agatha All Along! Here’s what to know about the upcoming series!
The MCU has been having a rough time lately, but in 2020, it was still riding high in success. That included the first Disney+ original series, WandaVision. It took a bit for the full story to unfold, but the gist was that after losing so much in the wake of Avengers: Endgame, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) suffered a total breakdown. Stealing the body of her love, the Vision (Paul Bettany), Wanda headed to Westview, a small town ravaged by the Blip (when Thanos killed half of Earth’s population, and it took five years for them to return).
Wanda’s powers caused her to warp the town to mimic classic TV shows where she and the Vision raised a family. Among the residents was next-door neighbor Agnes (Kathryn Hahn). It was revealed Agnes was really Agatha Harkness, a centuries-old witch who was manipulating Wanda to get her own power. The character was an instant hit thanks to the catchy song “Agatha All Along,” which played over the revelation of how she’d been behind the events of the series.
In the end, Wanda defeated Agatha and punished her by stripping her of her magic and making her think she was still Agnes. She released the townspeople from her spell before heading to her ugly fate in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
But you can’t keep a good witch down, as Agatha is ready for a huge comeback. After teasing titles like House of Harkness, Coven of Chaos and Darkhold Diaries, it’s settled on Agatha All Along and it looks like it will be a blast.
What is Agatha All Along about?
The show picks up with Agatha still thinking she’s Agnes until a young witch named Teen breaks her free of the spell. Now, Agatha is on a quest to regain her power, gathering a coven of witches to her side while hiding a sinister motive.
Hahn talked to Rolling Stone about how she never expected to return as Agatha, but the huge outpouring of fan support for her character pushed creator Jed Schaeffer to craft a sequel centering around Agatha.
"I wanted [Agatha] to not lose her acerbic nastiness. I wanted to actually see what lies beneath that weird, hard, mean shell. And also to have some music, keep the camp up. All the costume changes, all the stuff that I really loved about WandaVision, the element of performance in her — she really is a great old-school actor who loves putting on the ritz. I wanted that to be part of her still."
The show’s trailers hint at the wild journey Agatha goes on, which even includes musical numbers, while still on a darker quest for power that sheds light on her own mysterious past.
"In Agatha All Along, the infamous Agatha Harkness finds herself down and out of power after a suspicious goth Teen helps break her free from a distorted spell. Her interest is piqued when he begs her to take him on the legendary Witches’ Road, a magical gauntlet of trials that, if survived, rewards a witch with what they’re missing. Together, Agatha and this mysterious Teen pull together a desperate coven, and set off down, down, down The Road…"
Who stars in Agatha All Along?
Besides Hahn, the cast is well-stacked. Joe Locke plays Teen, a young witch who is under a spell, so he literally cannot say his name. Some fans speculate he may be the grown-up version of Tommy, one of Wanda’s created sons who, in the comics, becomes the magical hero Wiccan. Naturally, the showrunners and the actor are tight-lipped on that.
Aubrey Plaza plays Rio, a character newly created for the series and she and Hahn have experience working together on the sitcom Parks and Recreation. Sasheer Zamata plays Jennifer Kale, and Ali Ahn is Alice Wu-Gulliver, both well-known witches from Marvel Comics. Broadway icon and multiple Tony Award winner Patti LuPone is Lilia Calderu, a 450-year-old witch.
Also returning from WandaVision are a few smaller characters like Sharon Davis (Debra Jo Rupp), who somehow ends up in Agatha’s coven. There’s a chance there could be some surprise cameos that spark the series up even more.
