Family fun and imagination are the foundation on which the Walt Disney Company is built, but modern families are changing with the times. So, Disney has to grow and adapt as well.
Whether it's Disney, Universal Studios, or Warner Bros., one thing every entertainment juggernaut has to keep in mind is the audience. Disney's audience has grown to include more than families and children, so the Imagineers are going the extra mile to offer more for both families and the notorious Disney Adults. However, could it affect the parks' reputation?
Disney grows up with its audience
It was recently announced this week that Walt Disney World would be getting two new lounge/bar areas inspired by the Disney attractions Spaceship Earth and Pirates of the Caribbean. While many of us are very excited to see Disney expanding the lore and legacy of these two fixtures, one detail caught this writer's attention.
In the official announcement, The Disney Parks Blog shared the following new location coming to EPCOT.
"For over 40 years, Spaceship Earth has welcomed visitors to EPCOT as a shining beacon of optimism and hope. This just-announced lounge is inspired by the stories, shapes, and enduring legacy of this timeless icon. Taking inspiration from the geometric sphere, the zen space to gather and enjoy refreshments will be draped with rich textures and warm metallic tones, giving it a mysterious and elegant intimacy."
That's all very impressive, but the announcement also skips on one factor that might be relevant to many future EPCOT travelers. While this new venue might pay tribute to the "elegant intimacy" of EPCOT's design, only a certain demographic is allowed.
Walt Disney World shared the following description about its new Spaceship Earth Lounge, GEO-82.
"Elevate your day at a lounge for Guests ages 21 and up—featuring scenic views, innovative cocktails and exquisite small plates."
The 21+ age requirement makes GEO-82 the first adults-only space in the Disney Parks, following the inclusion of adult spaces on the Disney Cruise Line ships. What might look like an escape for a large number of fans might actually be a double-edged sword.
Not only does this addition arguably add to EPCOT's already toxic drinking culture, but it might feel exclusionary to many parties. Although there are arguably a tremendous number of adult Disney fans, the company's primary audience is still the family unit.
Yes, Disney is being more inclusive by recognizing that there should be a place for their adult fans, but the court of public opinion is rarely kind. Disney Adults (this writer included) might love it to bits, but how long before an upset mommy-blogger starts tearing the joint to shreds online?
Joking aside, this might be a very divisive decision on Disney's part. However, it's also a great way to keep the memories of early EPCOT alive. Think about it, most of the people who remember EPCOT's heyday are well over the age of 21. This might be an opportunity for Disney to once again capitalize on nostalgia without sacrificing the original attraction.
Either way, we won't truly know the results until the site officially opens. Until then, we'll just have to wait until it leaves the concept stage.
Do you think Disney is making the right call?
