Bluey fans around the world are absolutely flipping their wigs as Bluey: The Movie was officially announced and set to release in 2027. The little blue heeler who took the world by storm and absolutely dominated Disney+ is finally getting the big-screen treatment, but what could this mean for everyone's favorite cartoon dog?

Bluey, Bingo, Bandit, Chilli, and the rest of their animated entourage have entertained and delighted both children and parents since they first graced our screens. Thanks to a little Disney magic, the Australian animated series has reached worldly acclaim. It was honestly only a matter of time before we finally got a feature film.

Bluey on the Big Screen

This morning, fans were treated to a surprise from the show's official TikTok page (found here), announcing the project's official title. On the show's official blog, Ludo made the following statement, and viewers of all ages are undoubtedly on pins and needles.

Per The Bluey Blog,

"BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company today announced the first-ever animated feature film for Bluey."

"The film will premiere in cinemas worldwide in 2027, followed by streaming on Disney+. The movie will also air on ABC iview and ABC Kids in Australia post-theatrical release."

The blog post also shared that the show's regulars also have major roles to play, such as Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack reprising their roles as Chilli and Bandit, along Bluey composer Joff Bush coming in to provide original music.

Bluey creator Joe Brumm also weighed in on the massive announcement, sharing how the longer format of "The Sign" episode was a tremendous influence. On the blog, Brumm shared the following quote.

“I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on ‘The Sign’ in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that. I’ve always thought ‘Bluey’ deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together. I’m excited to continue to partner with Cecilia Persson, Tom Fussell and the team at BBC Studios, and Dana Walden, Alan Bergman and Disney to bring this new ‘Bluey’ story to the big screen.”

To say this is an exciting development for the beloved series would be a grand and glorious understatement, and many fans have speculated for ages that this would be the ultimate direction Ludo would take. However, one question still remains: what happens now?

We won't actually see the film until 2027, and a lot can happen in three years. Not only that, but the official announcement also shared that Bluey and her family are getting the CGI treatment from The Lego Movie's Amber Naismith, meaning that the Heelers are scheduled for a total makeover in the near future.

Additionally, Brumm also stated in a separate announcement that he is removing himself from the show in order to focus more on the film. In a letter to the viewers, Brumm shared the following.

"I always said I wouldn’t keep making the show if I thought I couldn’t make any new season as good as the last. This would have been the case for me with a potential season four, so I’ve decided to take a break from my involvement in the TV series. In the event I can’t wrap my head around doing more seasons myself, The Sign will mark my TV finale for Bluey and I wrote it as such... To be clear, this is not an announcement about the end of the show, but it is an acknowledgment that my focus will be on the film."

At the time of writing, Bluey still has over 150 episodes and minisodes and a pop culture influence that isn't going anywhere anytime soon. While many are still hoping for a fourth season before the film drops, big changes are happening for our favorite blue dog.

All of Bluey's adventures are ready and available for streaming on Disney+.
