Millions of viewers tuned in last night to Super Bowl LIX to watch the Kansas City Chiefs get pummeled by the Philadelphia Eagles, but everyone knows that the real action happens both on and off the field. The event is infamous for its commercials and halftime shows, but one special guest shocked everyone with his antics.
Although a game day ad from Disney was to be expected, Stitch crashing through the field and stealing a cart before slamming into the goal post was not on our radar. Of course, how else would our favorite blue troublemaker attend the Super Bowl?
Stitch crashes Super Bowl LIX (and theaters everywhere)
Lilo & Stitch (2025) is Disney's latest in a long line of live-action remakes. While many die-hard Disney buffs already have a certain negative attitude towards them, this one actually looks like it might live up to the Stitch we know and love... Because Disney has pulled something like this before.
While the film might be about both Stitch and his pal, Lilo, it's clear who is really going to sell the tickets to this new adaptation. However, Disney is already dipping into a familiar well with how it is marketing his latest adventure.
Turning back the clock to the early 2000s, Disney ran an ad campaign with Stitch that featured him crashing through famous scenes of other iconic animated classics. Not only did he wreck his way through films from The Little Mermaid to The Lion King, but he also made a mess of the Magic Kingdom as well.
Seriously, if Stitch can crash through the Super Bowl for a publicity stunt, how long will it be before he covers Cinderella Castle in toilet paper again? Joking aside, that actually would be a feat for Disney to pull off again.
In this writer's opinion, Disney is trying to hype up our favorite alien for more than the obvious reasons. Stitch already has quite a large and vocal fan base, rivaling that of the Master Mouse himself, so he really doesn't need that much help.
The reality might be that Disney is playing its nostalgia card to distract from the upcoming Snow White remake that already seems universally hated, just to save face. Whatever the reason, this writer is all on board for any reason to see Stitch on the big screen again.
Lilo & Stitch smashes through theaters May 25, 2025.
